What is Romance Anyway?

Today I took the good old Webster’s Dictionary down from the bookshelf,
dusted it off and opened up the musty pages.

I was curious to read the official definition of
romance and I found a variety of fancy words.

Webster says romance is to court or woo, to treat with chivalry
  or make overtures to
Perhaps a bit over the top but sounds good ...

Webster's take on being Romantic - the words were
fanciful, impractical, love affair

Now you must think I walk around with
my head in the clouds,
but I’m actually a firm believer in being practical
(within reason of course)

My favorite Webster’s definition of romance  -
a style of living!

 Now that's more like it.

“We find rest in those we love, and we provide a
resting place for those who love us”

                                          Saint Bernard of Clairvaux

Don't you agree this quote is beautiful and oh so true,

Put a Little Ooh La La in Your Life!

Bonjour Madame Mimi,

I agree this quote is beautiful. I hope I am a resting place for my loved ones, and romance is a style of living. I love how you put it, not just walking around with our heads in the clouds. You are an inspiration.

We can't wait for our trip back to Paris in May and are so excited to see you two lovebirds again. We'll talk soon.

Lots of love,
Tina

Bonjour Mimi~
What a great question! Most people have a different concept to the meaning, my belief is that it is indeed a style of living. It needs to be present each day ~ in our actions, the way we look at each other, feeling it's presence. I admire couples that are more in love after 50 years of marriage than they were on their wedding day.
Saint Bernard of Clairvaux defined it well!

Thank you for your kind comments. You are a doll!!

Romance for me personally celebrates, among other wonderful things, 'all that is light, and oh so lovely; all that is 'almost too beautiful for words'!.., As always, your post is masterfully written and artfully composed my dear lady!..,

Such inspiration for all of us to aspire to live the beautiful life with panache!..,

*[As an aside, reference your 'topic du jour', somewhere I remember reading that apparently the origins of the word "romantic" , parse down into two components.~ The first being,"rom-" originally referring actually to,"Rome".~ Then the second syllable, "-antic", originally referring to "antique", or more accurately perhaps with regard to origins of words,(not their current meanings)..,

..,'antiqua" or "antiquity".., It had originally therefore meant, "looking back to days of old", to Rome, to antiquity, with a longing, a nostaligic look and glance backword..,

..,Now we come full circle to the present day meaning with a "romantic notion" or thought , love and admiration for the past, for beauty and loveliness of days of old!.., Plus of course, all the current fascinating and lovely definitions you have so beautifully listed!]..,

Just a bit of trivia to add to the conversation my dear; sorry this was was so long, (yet I must say that I also prefer the last defintion the most as well)!..,

Thanks ever so much for your visit and kind words of support and helpful suggestions. It really helped , and between you and Cheri, I do believe the difficulty is resolved!

Cheers hugs and blessings!..,

Have a marvelous and "romantic" Valentines day in Paris with your sweetie my friend!..,

Warmest regards from Wanda Lee @ The Plumed Pen
